High density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism represents a major target for the development of therapies intended to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. HDL metabolism is complex and lower amount of HDL-C is often associated with increase cardiovascular risk. HDL can directly inhibit atherogenesis because it mediates reverse transport of cholesterol from atheroma foam cells to the liver.
